Arsenal are stepping up their efforts to land a “world-class” talent this summer, with ongoing discussions aimed at finding out what it would take to seal a deal, according to former scout Mick Brown.
Once the appointment of new director of football is finalised, Arsenal are expected to accelerate their summer plans.
Arsenal need new forwards this summer, that is clear, but it’s not just attacking reinforcements Arsenal are considering. Mikel Arteta is also keen to bolster his midfield options, with long-term target Martin Zubimendi of Real Sociedad strongly linked. Zubimendi is yet to give the green light to an Emirates switch and is also attracting attention from Real Madrid, which has forced Arsenal to weigh up other options.
Arsenal are expected to allow Jorginho and Thomas Partey to leave for free this summer, leaving them light in the centre of the park.
Another name on the radar is Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich. The German international, widely regarded as one of the best in his position, is admired for his experience and versatility. According to Brown, Arsenal have been working diligently behind the scenes, holding talks with Kimmich’s representatives to explore the terms required for a move.
“Arsenal have been working hard behind the scenes to reach an agreement with him. They’ve been speaking to his representatives to gauge what it would take to agree a deal,” Brown told Football Insider. “Now, they’ll be trying to convince him to join them rather than going elsewhere or staying at Bayern. Kimmich would bring a lot of experience to this Arsenal team and I think that’s what Mikel Arteta will be looking at – he’s won all there is to win.”
With Champions League football all but secured and a busy summer ahead, Arsenal appear determined to add top-tier quality to their squad with numerous transfers as they continue to build towards sustained success. With lots of money needed to reinforce the attack, a ‘free’ transfer for Kimmich would be very welcome, whilst adding winning pedigree.
