Arsenal look set to make a surprise defensive signing, according to reports emerging from Portugal this afternoon.
According to JN in Portugal, 21-year-old Benfica left-back Nuno Tavares will sign a five-year contract with Arsenal.
They say there is already a principle of agreement between the two clubs for the transfer of the player. They say he will sign a five-year contract. There were several clubs interested in him, including Napoli and Southampton, but they say Arsenal are ‘very close’ to guaranteeing the signing of the player.
Arsenal are likely to sell Sead Kolasinac, leaving Kieran Tierney as the only natural left-back at the club.
Taveres has been highly courted across Europe and whilst there is no indication of the fee it will take to complete a deal, he is valued at £6m on transfermarkt.
According to WhoScored, Tavares is very strong as crossing and making key passes. They list his weaknesses as holding on to the ball and concentration.
Tavares is currently behind Grimaldo in the pecking order at Benfica and was limited to just 7 starts in the league last season.
He would likely see similar restrictions to first-team football at Arsenal but would get chances when Kieran Tierney is rested or injured.
