Arsene Wenger will try to sign Karim Benzema this summer, and he has already opened talks with the player himself – a reliable source has confirmed.
Arsenal are in no rush to make more additions this summer but if a world class player becomes available they are open minded. If Benzema becomes available, Arsenal will be very interested – with Wenger a huge fan of the 27 year old forward.
Reliable Spanish journalist Kike Marin tweeted on Monday night: “Wenger has spoken with Benzema and Arsenal will try to sign him if Karim doesn´t play with Rafa Benítez…”
Of course that statement would indicate that any move for Benzema would come late in the window. How will Benzema know he will not play until the season starts? It is being reported by many Spanish outlet that Benzema is surplus to Benitez and Madrid will try to sign a back up striker and play Cristiano Ronaldo as a lone forward next season. This is yet to be confirmed, but with pre-season starting soon the situation could become clearer.
Any deal for Benzema would likely come close to breaking Arsenal’s transfer record. That record currently stands at £42.5million, the amount Wenger paid for Mesut Ozil in 2013. Wenger will know he cannot try to haggle a fee for Benzema, with Manchester United also very interested in the Frenchman.
Benzema would add an obvious World Class quality to the Arsenal team and help ease the goalscoring burdens off of Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud. There’s no doubt that having a striker like Benzema in front of Ozil at number 10 would significantly help our title chances. When you consider we also have the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Aaron Ramsey, Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere in the midfield – it really makes you think that a signing like Benzema would complete this team.
I’d warn Arsenal fans that if this deal did actually happen, I doubt it will for at least a few more weeks.
