5 replacements for Thomas Partey that Arsenal could sign

The Athletic reported today that Arsenal will definitely seek a replacement should Thomas Partey leave the club this summer.

With the Ghanaian increasingly likely to depart this summer, Arsenal are actively exploring midfield reinforcements. Partey’s contract is set to expire at the end of the month and Arsenal now seem ready to let him go.

Here’s a look at five names on Arsenal’s radar who could step into the Ghanaian’s shoes.

1. Ryan Flamingo – PSV (22)

A left-field option but one that fits Arsenal’s evolving tactical profile and my personal preference. Ryan Flamingo is a young Dutch talent who can slot in as either a right-sided centre-back or defensive midfielder and potentially right back too. That duality is vital for Mikel Arteta, who increasingly values hybrid players capable of adapting to positional rotations. Flamingo’s technical quality and composure on the ball are standout traits, and while he may need time to adjust to Premier League intensity, his role wouldn’t require immediate starts. His low wage demands and age make him a smart depth option with high developmental upside.

He’s also an international teammate of Jorrel Hato, another player Arsenal may sign this summer.

2. Christian Nørgaard – Brentford (31)

Linked by the Evening Standard this week, Nørgaard offers a completely different profile: Premier League-ready experience. As Brentford’s captain and midfield anchor, he’s shown he can consistently break up play, read danger, and organise those around him. Arsenal wouldn’t be buying a long-term starter, but rather a reliable operator who could drop into matches late to protect leads or rotate in high-volume periods. With Arsenal back in the Champions League, experienced squad players like Nørgaard could be crucial – especially when considering they are losing both Jorginho and Partey (in this scenario).

3. Douglas Luiz – Juventus (27)

The Aston Villa midfielder has been on Arsenal’s radar for several windows, and this summer may finally be the time to strike. Luiz was excellent at Aston Villa, contributing both defensively and in the final third, and his versatility to play as a 6 or an advanced 8 makes him especially appealing. He’s had a down season in Juventus, struggling to adapt there and now could be available at less than the £40million they paid for him. The Brazilian’s ball progression, set-piece delivery and high work rate would suit Arteta’s system perfectly. Signing Luiz would require significant investment in terms of transfer fee and wages (the most expensive package on this list) – but his quality and Premier League experience could be worth it.

4. Lucien Agoumé – Sevilla (23)

Currently playing for Sevilla, Agoumé is emerging as a value option in the market. The French midfielder excels in the number 6 role, showing good composure under pressure and a reliable passing range. His limited versatility might restrict him to a specific role, but he’s young enough to develop under Arsenal’s coaching. Reports suggest Albert Sambi Lokonga (who has been on loan at Sevilla this season) could be used in a swap deal to reduce the fee, making this a potentially savvy piece of business. If Arsenal are looking for a disciplined anchoring midfielder, Agoumé could quietly fit the bill.

5. Quentin Timber – Feyenoord (24)

The older brother of Jurrien Timber, Quentin is a multi-functional midfielder with tactical awareness and athleticism — hallmarks of Arteta’s ideal player. He can play as a 6, 8, or even in more advanced areas, and his ability to press and recover quickly would mesh well with Arsenal’s high-intensity style. With just one year remaining on his current deal, Timber could be available for below his market value. Reuniting him with his brother might also help ease his transition and unlock his full potential at the Emirates.

As Arsenal’s transfer window heats up, these midfield names will remain under close watch. Whether it’s a proven Premier League operator or a versatile young prospect, replacing Partey won’t be about one-for-one — it’s about reshaping the midfield for a more sustainable future.
