4. James McCarthy
I am and have been a major admirer of James McCarthy since his days at Wigan Athletic. What impressed me most with McCarthy at Wigan was that, despite being an excellent tackler in midfield, he came across as more of a deep-lying playmaker. His passing range is exquisite for a midfielder so young. Combine that with his good positional sense and incredible (Ramsey-like) stamina and you have one potentially world class holding midfielder.
I have McCarthy down as one of my preferred replacements for Mikel Arteta and you can see why when comparing them. McCarthy played as a box-to-box midfielder last season for Everton (hence better attacking stats than Arteta) but he has all the attributes to cement his place as our holding midfielder.
