Chambers Isn’t A Right-Back?
Calum Chambers kept his place in the side from last weekend’s FA Cup victory over Middlesbrough. I thought Chambers’ performance was overall impressive last week, and keeping him in the side seemed fair.
Chambers stayed on the right side of defence against The Eagles, and he was up against Puncheon, Zaha and eventually, Bolasie. We all know how dangerous all of them players are, especially Yannick Bolasie. The Englishman’s pace and manoeuvrability was exploited several times by the Palace wide players, and his discipline was tested.
He picked up a booking, and things became even more problematic, when Pardew brought on Bolasie in the second half. The DR Congo international brought more pace & trickery for Chambers to deal with. It was fair to say, Chambers had a relatively poor afternoon, and its becoming more evident that his future defensive role isn’t the right back position. I think, like many, that his future lies in the centre of defence, but that option isn’t available right now.
