The defender has developed into a top centre-back and should be in the starting line-up for the French team this summer, where he can be a crucial part of the nation’s plans to repel the demons lingering from a disastrous campaign in South Africa and establish themselves as one of the world’s superior nations once again.

Koscielny has created a formidable partnership in North London this season with Per Mertsaker and signalled his future intentions by signing a new contract just recently. Now is the time for the defender to establish himself on the national side fully and lead his team to the stages of international competitions the French has lot touch with.

Though not favourites, the French are contenders. The main objective is to compete until the latter stages and set themselves up for a monumental campaign in the European Championships in two years time- which will of course be held in France.

Bacary Sagna (France)

The long-serving Frenchman’s future is uncertain and if he is looking for greener grass on the other side of the fence then this is the tournament where Sagna can put his name in the shop window, perhaps earning a move to one of Europe’s elite clubs.

The defender has been an unsung hero for Arsenal this season and will be sorely missed if he decides to move elsewhere. He is a key-part of his club side and must prove to be similar for his national team, where he is one of the more experienced players- particularly in defence.

In an emerging French side, Sagna is the symbol of the departing era. He may still be present in two years time but this is his last chance to experience a World Cup tournament. He will be hoping to lead the French outsiders to the latter stages and spoil the party for some big teams.

Olivier Giroud (France)

A long, difficult campaign for the French striker is drawing to a close and the perfect reward would be a positive performance on the world stage. However, he is not expected to start and will be competing with Karim Benzema for a key-role in the team, so must be ready to step-up if the Real Madrid forward can’t deliver.

Though he earns a lot of criticism at Arsenal, he has done a fine job this term- racking up 20 league goals and a number of assists. Giroud may not be the goalscorer we crave but if a new signing is imminent then Giroud will be the man to provide the deft touches and flicks to his new strike partner.

In Brazil, his aim will be to earn a starting berth and show the world what he is capable of, answering his critics before he embarks on a important season with his club side. He is capable of performing on his day but unfortunately he has a record of disappearing against big sides, which he must overcome this summer.
