2. Arteta Out, Cabaye In
An opinion that many Arsenal fans are undecided on, but for Mikel Arteta, the cards just aren’t stacking in his favour.
Since joining the club in 2011, the Spaniard has been at the centre of everything, and most recently was handed the Arsenal captaincy when Thomas Vermaelen left last summer.
However, at 33-years-old, time is becoming just another added pressure on the central midfielder, who has recently returned to training after enduring a gruesome three-month injury.
But as Arteta looks to become in contention with a return to the Gunners squad, talk has moved to whether Arsenal really need him.
Not only has Francis Coquelin made a late charge to be within the candidates for player of the season, but the return of both Jack Wilshere and new position of Aaron Ramsey means Arteta faces an uphill struggle to simply slot back in to the team.
Reports in the media have linked the Gunners with a move for Frenchman, Yohan Cabaye, for years, but Wenger decided to go for experience in Arteta back in 2011, whilst Cabaye went to Newcastle instead.
But now, the defensive midfielder isn’t enjoying his time at money-spinning giants, PSG, and Wenger could land him for as little as £10million.
The 29 year old has always been admired by Wenger, and he could be the missing puzzle piece to partner fellow national teammate, Coquelin.
But the matter is that at his age, Arteta is past his best form, but he does provide one thing, and that is loyalty to the team. He will always put the team before himself, and if that means staying defensive whilst everyone else does the fancy attacking stuff, then that’s what he will do.
Arsene Wenger recently wrapped up a further one-year deal for the Spanish star, which means we will most likely be seeing him wearing the armband for a further season.
