For a player that’s suffered a season on the sidelines, Jack Wilshere is now ready to prove his critics wrong and shine for his country at this summer’s European Championships.
Fresh Arsenal will be picking our way through all of the Gunners featuring in this years tournament and assessing their chances of action at the international level.
Group Games
England v Russia – Saturday June 11th – 8pm
England v Wales – Thursday June 16th – 2pm
England v Slovakia – Monday 20th June – 8pm
Will He Play?
There’s nothing Wilshere would love more than to feature for his country, and despite his critics there should be a spot in the starting XI for the midfielder.
When everyone is fit and ready in this England side, the 24-year-old is arguably the best midfielder we have and for that reason Roy simply has to have him in the side.
Wilshere’s style has changed over the last few years, and he’s now competing with Jordan Henderson for the secondary defensive midfield position alongside Eric Dier.
If Roy is going to get anywhere in this tournament then sticking with his best starting XI and using the substitutes to hold a lead is the best way to do so.
Because Wilshere offers more of an attacking outlet he’ll be allowed to roam forward with Dier covering the backline, and his link up play with Rooney will be pivotal.
For that reason he’s sure to play, and as long as he can stay fit there’s every chance that he’ll play a part in all of the Three Lions fixtures, because Roy is a massive fan of the player.
What Can He Offer England?
Wilshere picked up six out of seven man of the match performances during England’s qualification for the tournament in France, so quality and reliance is the first thing on his CV.
As well as that, this is a player who knows what it means to wear the shirt and represent your country, so undoubtedly he’ll be a voice both on and off the pitch.
His ability to defend and attack with pace is another option to have in our squad, and there are not many names you can apply both of those attributes to these days.
Due to the type of teams England are coming up against, the midfielder also has the chance to get back into his best form, and he’ll love to twist out of sticky situations to turn defence into attack.
If he needed any more of a drive to perform well, then the majority of fans and media will have done that, because Wilshere has received a landslide of abuse for his selection this summer.
He’ll want to prove his critics wrong from the first whistle, and with it have the chance to turn heads ahead of a season where Arsenal have a wealth of competition in the middle of the park.
Will It Effect His Gunners Future?
With the signing of Granit Xhaka confirmed, Arsenal could look to build a perfect partnership with Xhaka and Wilshere, and a series of good performances this summer could be vital.
When he’s fit Wilshere is one of our best options in that area, and he’s got a great chance to show Wenger why he deserves to be a regular in an Arsenal shirt.
On the other side, if Wilshere fails to light up the England side then it’s going to be hard to justify why he should start over the likes of Aaron Ramsey and Santi Cazorla.
