Winter Transfer Window

With the transfer window upon us, many Arsenal fans are hoping, dreaming, praying of a multi-million pound signing particularly in the central striker position. But will Arsene delve deep into his pocket or will Arsenal fans be left frustrated with a lack of signings, as they are that have become accustomed during the Wenger reign?

Edinson Cavani is the name on most Arsenal fans lips this winter. The PSG striker has netted 12 goals in 17 appearances but widespread rumours have circulated about the resentment that he has been feeling towards the main man Zlatan Ibrahimović. His unhappiness is where Arsenal come in, however they face strong opposition from a host of other clubs around Europe who are also struggling to find a single striker to score 20+ goals a season. Edinson Cavani is a natural striker, whose link up play and aerial ability make him a perfect candidate to fill the no.9 role at Arsenal. Having paid a vast sum of money to acquire the services of Cavani PSG may be less than willing to part with a striker, who has quickly adapted to French football and his goals are quickly making him a fans favourite. A large 60 million sum could make PSG’s heads turn and secure the services of a man that potentially could win the title for Arsenal.

The enigma that is Luiz Suraez is still very much admired by Arsene Wenger. Having already scored 19 goals this season, despite missing the first five games of the season, he is one of the most prolific in Europe. The problem Arsenal face is that he has recently signed a new five year contract and seems settled at Anfield. Liverpool has stuck with the Uruguayan, despite the constant problems he has posed in the past Liverpool have well and truly reaped the benefits of his talent this season. Questions have been raised about Suarez against the premier league elite having only scored 3 against the teams from 1-13th compared to 16 goals against the teams in the bottom 7. Arsenal would have to smash their own record of £42 million paid for Mezut Ozil but may even have to surpass the world transfer million of £86 million paid for Gareth Bale to convince Liverpool to part company with the in form no.9.

Another name that should be high on Arsenals list of targets is Jay Rodrigez of Southampton. Jay has recently made an appearance for England and has scored 9 goals already this season. He has a lot of pace in behind and would stretch defences, adding a different dimension to Olivier Giroud who likes the ball to feet. He could be bought for roughly 15 million but may play second string to Oliver Giroud who up until late has been very impressive this term.

The idea for continuity is embraced by Arsene Wenger. Integrating a whole host of new singings may affect the balance and morale of a well-rounded Arsenal team.  Tottenham have found this a problem with a whole host of new signings struggling to make the grade at this moment in time, most notably Eric Lamela who was branded ‘The New Totti’ in Italy. Oliver Giroud has scored 11 goals this term whilst also chipping in a fair few assists. With him at the helm Arsenal lie pretty at the top of the premier league and have also progressed to the last 16 of the Champions league. As the good old saying goes ‘Why change a winning team?’

Jackson Martinez, Karin Benzema and Gonzalo Higuaín have also been linked to the north London club. But I feel Arsenal need to supplement the forward area which may seem very vacant with an injury to Oliver Giroud. Luiz Suraez is the ideal choice but if Arsenal break the bank with the singing of Edinson Cavani this could finally be the year for the trophy drought to end.
