When it comes to bringing new talent to Arsenal, Arsene Wenger hasn’t exactly be known for his ruthless streak in the transfer market.
A constant theme of short-changing clubs and failing to get his hands on established Premier League players has left supporters fed up.
However, it seems Starsport have opened up a can of worms on the Gunners transfer plans, with Wenger set to challenge Pep Guardiola for one of the best defenders in the league.
According to the report, Virgil van Dijk tops both of their transfer wish-list’s and are preparing to launch a bid in the region of £50m.
Representatives of the Dutch defender have already made contact with City and Arsenal in what seems to be a two-horse race for the 25-year-old.
Despite Per Mertesacker signing a contract extension earlier this year, it seems Arsenal are beginning to prepare for the future on a large-scale.
Now this story usually goes one of two ways, Wenger either makes a bid but isn’t willing to pay full price, or we go and sign someone who will be ‘the next big thing’.
Arsenal might not be in Champions League action this week, but get a free bet on Real Madrid to overcome their neighbours.
But I think this deal might have some legs for a few reasons. Firstly, van Dijk has proven he’s got what it takes to play in this league.
Arsenal are going through a major shake up this summer and buying players they know can cut in England should be a number one priority.
The second reason is preparing for the future, with Monreal, Mertesacker and Koscielny all nearing their peak level, the younger legs of Van Dijk are promising.
We’ve already bagged ourselves Sead Kolasinac, and there needs to be some sort of middle ground ahead of Calum Chambers and Rob Holding.
Thirdly, Wenger doesn’t really have a great choice when it comes to centre back’s these days, because there are so few for sale, let alone good enough.
Van Dijk could have one season to integrate next to Koscielny and Mustafi before becoming the long-term replacement we’ve been dreaming of.
