Arsenal are being linked with a swoop for two young defender if The Sun are to be believed… yeah I know but we are desperate to talk about something.

The two players to be linked with Arsenal by the paper are Manchester City’s Jason Denayer and Borussia Dortmund’s Matthias Ginter. Both players could be available for between £10million-£12million apparently.

Ginter (22) and Denayer (21) are young defenders and Wenger is in the market for a young defender to make a first team impact this summer.

Ginter is a long-term target for Arsene Wenger but they may struggle to tempt Dortmund to sell. The German club have already sold several first team stars this summer and £12million is unlikely to be enough to see them part with a player that played in the first team a lot last season and someone that can play at right back, centre back and defensive midfield.

The Gunners could tempt Ginter perhaps if they offered him a starting role in central defense, as the German was often deployed at right back last season. I think though that Dortmund are not going to listen to any offers for an extremely talented young player.

Denayer looks more likely to be available – he is yet to feature for Manchester City’s first team, despite picking up 7 international caps. The report in The Sun suggests that Wenger could tempt Denayer with first team promises as he is unlikely to feature under Pep Guardiola, who continues to consider moves for Leonardo Bonucci and John Stones. With Vincent Kompany, Nicolas Otamendi and Elaquim Mangala still at the club then Denayer’s route to the first team is extremely crowded.

At Arsenal Denayer has a clear route to the first team – good performances could easily see him jump ahead of Gabriel Paulista and Per Mertesacker in the pecking order. With Mertesacker soon turning 32 and Koscielny 31, Denayer, aged just 21 could be the future leader of the Gunners defense.

The report says City would accept around £15million – and if Denayer can fulfil his potential that would be money very well spent.
