Arsenal have made a formal bid for Real Madrid defender Álvaro Arbeloa, according to various reports in England and Spain.

The former Liverpool player is reportedly unsettled in Madrid due to lack of playing time. It is thought he would cost in the region of £3million to sign.

Arbeloa is naturally a right back, but capable of playing in any defensive position. There is no obvious need for a player in his position at the club at the moment, but Arbeloa’s experience would be invaluable.

He turned 32 at the start of the year and has 56 caps for Spain. Since his move to Real Madrid in 2009, he has played for them 140 times. He’s a player who knows the Premier League well, having played as regular for Liverpool between 2007 and 2009.

In truth I’d be a little confused if we were to sign him as there are much more pressing needs at the moment. But Arbeloa’s signing would be one that would add quality, experience and depth to our defence. His asking price of just £3.6million also makes a potential move more appealing.
