Blog: Arsenal Should Loan This Back-Up After 28-Year-Old Reveals He’s Staying

Arsene Wenger needs to make some big decisions in the next few weeks, and I believe it’s time to let one of his highest rated players head out on loan.

After a season of Cech underperforming and Ospina appearing to sulk, a fresher outlook on the goalkeeping situation could do wonders in the long-run.

Following the return of Jens Lehmann to the coaching ranks and the comments of David Ospina, it certainly seems as if that’s the way the club is going.

Ospina recently told reporters he’s ready to commit to his contract and fight for the number one jersey, something he’s failed to establish since joining in 2014.

However, Ospina sticking around leaves Wenger with what he regards as “three world-class” goalkeepers in the squad, something that can’t be all sunshine and roses.

If we’re really going to get a glimpse of what Martinez is capable of, a secondary loan spell to another Premier League side could be the perfect answer for all parties.

We’ve had a chance to weigh up the 24-year-old’s ability in a number of cup and pre-season games, but he’s never really been able to keep hold of the gloves.

With Cech and Ospina ahead of him in the pecking order, Martinez is mature enough to know there’s still hard work to be done if he wants to become a Gunners regular.

After winning three FA Cup’s in four years, Wenger has his sights on the Premier League title and has hinted that the Europa League and League Cup will not be considered as hugely important games.

That being said, fellow academy graduate and shot-stopper Matt Macey could come in to take up a similar role that Martinez has held this over the last two years.

I get the impression that Martinez wants to be at this club for a very long time, so one more spell away from the Emirates could be the final step in achieving that goal.

Oxford, Wolves, Rotherham and Sheffield Wednesday have all welcomed Martinez on loan, so it’s clear he needs some more time in the Premier League.

Some big decisions need to be made in regards to transfers and I think we’ll see a lot of activity before the opening game of the season on August 11th.
