According to reports surfacing in the media today, Arsenal could announce Petr Cech as their new captain once the 2015/16 campaign is over.

The man with the armband at the moment is Mikel Arteta, who is failing to pick up a starting place and will end his playing career at the Emirates later this year.

That means that the Spaniard’s role is up for grabs, and reports have suggested that Arsene Wenger is ready to hand Petr Cech the responsibility.

At 33 years old the goalkeeper still has a few top level seasons in front of him, and the impact he’s made since his Summer arrival has been priceless.

Both on and off of the pitch it’s been evident that Cech has made a difference, and his experience will be key to making sure this Arsenal side can push on for more silverware.

But despite all signs pointing to the Czech Republic international taking charge of captaincy duties, Per Mertesacker is also waiting in the wings to continue his efforts.

The German defender has been pivotal to bringing through some of the younger players like Hector Bellerin and Calum Chambers, whilst forming a solid partnership with Laurent Koscielny.

He is certainly a player that cares for this club and he too will finish his years alongside the Gunners, but it’s unclear how much longer he can keep his place in the starting eleven.

Mertesacker turns 32 later this year and has already retired from international duties, and with the rising talent of Gabriel Paulista coming through there’s certainly competition at centre back.

Taking charge of the captaincy is a massive deal for this club, it has been a long time since we had a demanding, quality player in the dressing room, but Petr Cech has changed that.

He’s likely to be the fans favourite to wear the armband, and hopefully, this will kickstart a new era of football at the North London club.
