Arsenal Pull Plug On £25million Schneiderlin As Attention Turns To Vidal

Arsenal have reportedly pulled the plug on any potential deal for Morgan Schneiderlin as the Frenchman looks set to join Manchester United. Arsenal, unlike United, are unwilling to pay Southampton’s asking price despite the player reportedly favouring a move to Arsenal. The Gunners will now turn their attentions elsewhere..

The Daily Mail report that Arsenal’s interest in Vidal is genuine, whilst they are also monitoring long term target Lars Bender. They report that, as we have also heard from many sources now – Arsene Wenger did not value Schneiderlin at £25million. If Arturo Vidal is available for £21million, as many would have you believe – then you can see why Wenger turned down a move for the Frenchman. Bender would probably be available for less than the Schneiderlin asking price, too.

There has been talk that Arsenal have almost agreed to sign Vidal already, with Chilean journalist Hernan Feler appearing to confirm a deal was in place. Many are suggesting Feler was the first to reveal Arsenal’s interest in Alexis Sanchez last season. Hopefully there’s something in this. Here’s the tweet that caught our eye, with Feler retweeting it – so we presume he is endorsing the original tweet.

Vidal, 28 is not an orthodox defensive midfielder. He can play there and anywhere in the midfield, even as a second striker. Vidal’s versatility would be very handy but is he what we need? Personally I think Coquelin could remain as our starting holding midfielder and if he were to get injured, a double pivot of Vidal – Ramsey / Wilshere / Cazorla could work if both players were disciplined in going forward.

No reputable source in England has covered Arsenal’s ‘pursuit’ of Vidal yet, so for the time being I remain sceptical. If a deal looks like it is actually happening then I’ll start to think about where he would fit in. If we did sign him, we’d have another world class player on our hands and combined with the signing of Petr Cech – we’d have a seriously good looking squad. I can’t wait for the new season already.
