Arsenal Loan Watch: Niles Shines As Five Young Gunners Feature

Arsenal fans may not have any football to really cheer about until Monday nights clash against Liverpool, but there’s plenty to talk about away from the Emirates.

Five Gunners featured for their loan teams during mid-week fixtures in the Football League, featuring just one assist from games over Tuesday and Wednesday evening.

And following the successes of some of Arsenal’s youngsters currently spending time at lower level clubs, Arsene Wenger has decided to let another duo leave for a seasons spell.

Both Gedion Zelalem and Wellington Silva have wrapped up loan switches in the last 24 hours, as they head to Rangers and Bolton Wanderers respectively.

You can keep up to date with all of the progress our Arsenal stars are making at their clubs by following our weekly loan watch segments, with last weekends available here if you missed it.

Chuba Akpom (Hull City)

The striker played 72 minutes of Hull City’s home tie against Fulham, which ended in a 2-1 victory for The Tigers.

Akpom was replaced in by Nikica Jelavic, who picked up the assist for Hull’s second goal which proved to be the winner, sending Steve Bruce’s side towards the summit of the Championship.

Despite not being involved in any of the goals, Akpom played a crucial part of his new sides tie, but he has now gone two games without finding the back of the net.

However, rare goals from Sone Aluko and Ahmed El Mohamady ensured that Bruce will not be thinking twice about his decision to start Akpom, who is set to be rewarded with plenty of game time following his impressive start.

Emiliano Martinez (Wolves)

The third choice Arsenal goalkeeper couldn’t do enough to keep out the attacking presence of QPR, who beat his Wolves side 3-2.

The home side looked comfortable during the opening half an hour, with former Gunner Benik Afobe stroking home on the 17th minute.

Kevin McDonald made it 2-0 to Wolves and suddenly Championship life didn’t look so pleasant for Chris Ramsey’s side, who were relegated from the Premier League last season.

However, it was an evening to forget for Martinez, who allowed Charlie Austin to slot home before half time, and then allow Matt Phillips to grab a brace to take home all three points.

Isaac Hayden (Hull City)

The 19-year-old was used as a late substitute during Hull’s 2-1 victory over Fulham, as Hull moved one place behind top spot in the Championship.

Hayden played the final 12 minutes as a defensive midfielder, and influenced his side to get a late winner at the KC Stadium.

The Arsenal Under-21 captain replaced former Spurs man, Tom Huddlestone, who is expected to make a move to the Premier League in the coming days.

That would quite easily provide a regular spot for Hayden to jump into, so it’s good news all round for our loan stars at Hull this evening.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles (Ipswich Town)

The midfielder made a big impact as he saw his new side reach the top of the Championship on Tuesday evening, as Ipswich beat Burnley 2-0.

Maitland-Niles played 84 minutes for Mick McCarthy’s as they pulled off a surprise win over the former Premier League side.

Not only did the 19-year-old cause trouble in the attacking midfield areas, but he also picked up another assist for David McGoldrick’s goal to make things 2-0 on the 71st minute.

A short corner was taken quickly before Maitland-Niles swung an inviting cross into the penalty area, where McGoldrick latched on with a header into the top left corner of the net.

Daniel Crowley (Barnsley)

The 18-year-old completed the full 90 minutes in Barnsley’s impressive 3-2 win over Millwall during Tuesday nights League One fixture.

Since arriving at Lee Johnson’s side, Crowley has made an impressive run of appearances, despite featuring in a slightly more defensive position.

Crowley was unable to pick up any goals or assists in this game, but the fact he is playing regular and competitive minutes is exactly what Arsene Wenger will be glad about.

This 5-goal-thriller went right to the death, with Barnsley’s Lewin Nyatanga slotting home in stoppage time to ensure Crowley’s new side would be travelling home with all three points.

Yaya Sanogo (Ajax)

The French international is in contention to feature in Thursday nights Europa League qualifying game against Jablonec, after the Dutch club failed to make the Champions League.

Sanogo has had a mixed start to life in the Netherlands, having racked up three goals in three appearances since joining in late July.

The striker managed a pre-season hat-trick in a fixture that finished 6-1 against Umm Salal SC, but has since found a regular spot on the bench.

Ajax’s most recent fixture saw Sanogo play the final eight minutes during the 3-0 victory over Willem, where he made very little impact in the short space of time he was handed.
