With the news that Gabriel is in talks with Valencia and that Calum Chambers’ future is also in doubt, it has got many thinking that Arsenal could be about to dip into the market and sign a new central defender. The Gunners did sign Shkodran Mustafi last summer but have since moved to a three at the back system and with Per Mertesacker retiring at the end of the season and injury problems continuing to hamper Laurent Koscielny, a new signing may be needed in this department.
In this article, we take a look at three possible arrivals.

Let’s start with the obvious. Van Dijk has handed in a transfer request at Southampton and although he seems to have his heart set on a move to Liverpool, an Arsenal bid could change that, especially if any bid included Calum Chambers, a player Southampton are reportedly keen on having back. The Gunners look good with three at the back but, especially when Mertesacker is not available (and he retires at the end of the season), the side lack height at the back, and van Dijk monstrous frame will certainly be a welcome addition. Van Dijk would clearly improve Arsenal’s starting eleven and considering he has handed in a transfer request, I would be surprised if Wenger is not considering making a move.
