Fresh Arsenal first reported the news that the Gunners were interested in Nwakali back in late 2015, before confirming the news towards the end of January.

The Nigerian international first attracted attention during the Under-17 World Cup last year where he scooped the Player of the Tournament award after leading his country to victory.

Wenger had been tracking the highly sought midfielder ever since, but due to a number of issues surrounding the signing of the contract, the move had to be stalled.

FIFA regulations state that the transfer for Nwakali couldn’t be completed due to him being under the age of 18 and not a member of the European Union.

However, following his birthday on June 5th the wonder-kid confirmed on his personal social media sites that the deal was over the line, which will be a welcome boost to the Gunners academy.

As well as the pictures on his Facebook site, his personal bio now reads “Footballer for Arsenal FC and Nigeria U20 Nike Athlete.

The move has reportedly cost the North London club within the region of £3million, which is a high sum for such a young player who will now link up with Arsenal U21’s.

Standing as a Nigerian international as well, Nwakali already has a relationship with 2015/16 breakthrough Alex Iwobi, who will be on hand to ensure he gets a warm welcome at London Colney.

Arsenal were forced to fight off interest from Barcelona and Manchester City to get the signature, but he recently told All Nigeria Soccer that Arsenal were always his first choice.

I have just come back from London. I have signed a five year contract with Arsenal.

So many teams were interested in me but it has been my dream at a tender age to play for Arsenal.

He’s certainly an exciting addition to the academy programme, and with a number of players set to be sent out on loan yet again it’s a great chance for Nwakali to make a good first impression.
